1 The System K : A Foundation for Modal Logic
نویسنده
چکیده
Strictly speaking, modal logic studies reasoning that involves theuseof the expressions ‘necessarily’ and ‘possibly’. The main idea is to introduce the symbols∫ (necessarily) and∂ (possibly) to a system of logic so that it is able todistinguish threedifferentmodesof assertion:∫A(Aisnecessary), A (A is true), and ∂A (A is possible). Introducing these symbols (or operators) would seem to be essential if logic is to be applied to judging the accuracy of philosophical reasoning, for the concepts of necessity and possibility are ubiquitous in philosophical discourse. However, at the very dawn of the invention of modal logics, it was recognized that necessity and possibility have kinships with many other philosophically important expressions. So the term ‘modal logic’ is also usedmore broadly to cover a whole family of logics with similar rules and a rich variety of different operators. To distinguish the narrow sense, some people use the term ‘alethic logic’ for logics of necessity and possibility. A list describing some of the better known of these logics follows.

Suhrawardi's Modal Syllogisms
Suhrawardi’s logic of the Hikmat al-Ishraq is basically modal. So to understand his modal logic one first has to know the non-modal part upon which his modal logic is built. In my previous paper ‘Suhrawardi on Syllogisms’(3) I discussed the former in detail. The present paper is an exposition of his treatment of modal syllogisms. On the basis of some reasonable existential presuppositi...
متن کاملEmbedding Coalition Logic in the Minimal Normal Multi-Modal Logic with Intersection
We present a satisfiability-preserving embedding of coalition logic into a normal modal logic. An advantage of standard, normal, modal logics is a well understood theoretical foundation and the availability of tools for automated verification and reasoning. The target logic is multi-modal K with intersection of modalities, interpreted over standard Kripke models corresponding to game structures...
متن کاملA Semi-Analytical Solution for Free Vibration and Modal Stress Analyses of Circular Plates Resting on Two-Parameter Elastic Foundations
In the present research, free vibration and modal stress analyses of thin circular plates with arbitrary edge conditions, resting on two-parameter elastic foundations are investigated. Both Pasternak and Winkler parameters are adopted to model the elastic foundation. The differential transform method (DTM) is used to solve the eigenvalue equation yielding the natural frequencies and mode shape...
متن کاملWhy Do We Need Justification Logic?
In this paper, we will sketch the basic system of Justification Logic, which is a general logical framework for reasoning about epistemic justification. Justification Logic renders a new, evidence-based foundation for epistemic logic. As a case study, we compare formalizations of the Kripke ‘Red Barn’ scenario in modal epistemic logic and Justification Logic and show here that the latter provid...
متن کاملA Differential Transform Approach for Modal Analysis of Variable Thickness Two-directional FGM Circular Plates on Elastic Foundations
Based on the differential transformation method, a semi-analytical solution is developed for free vibration and modal stress analyses of variable thickness two-directional functionally graded circular plates with restrained edges, resting on elastic foundations. Variations of the material and geometry parameters are monitored by five distinct exponential functions. The presented non-dimensional...
